How to Install the Ramona Child Theme
In this tutorial, we are walking through an installation of the Ramona Child Theme files. We are using a fresh installation of WordPress and our site is hosted on SiteGround.
1. Disable all plugins
Temporarily disable any plugins that came pre-installed on your site to avoid potential conflicts while installing your files.
In the sidebar, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins. Select all plugins by checking the checkbox at the top. Then, from the Bulk Actions dropdown box, select Deactivate > Apply.
If you’re installing on an existing site and are using WordFence, you may need to additionally activate Learning Mode within the WordFence plugin to prevent any interference with file installation.
2. Install the Divi Theme
In the sidebar, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme > Choose File.
Browse to where you have the zip file saved, upload it, and click Install Now.
Once you have the success screen, click Activate.
3. Check Divi System Settings
In the sidebar, go to Divi > Support Center.
At the top of the page, you should see a section called System Status. Click Show Full Report. This checks for Divi compatibility with your server settings and helps prevent performance-related issues. If you see any errors, you can contact your host for help resolving them to the recommended settings listed within the report.
4. Install the Child Theme
In the sidebar, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme > Choose File.
Browse to where you have the child theme files saved, select the zip file, upload it, and click Install Now.
Once you have the success screen, click Activate.
5. Install plugins
Look for the notice at the top of your WordPress interface (indicated with a yellow bar on the left) and select Begin Installing Plugins, or, you can navigate there manually by going to Appearance > Install Plugins.
Select all plugins by checking the checkbox at the top. Then, from the Bulk Actions dropdown box, select Install > Apply.
By default, your plugins should install Deactivated but go ahead and activate the One Click Demo Import plugin. In the sidebar, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins > Find One Click Demo Import and click the link that says Activate.
6. Check Permalinks Setup
In the sidebar, go to Settings > Permalinks and make sure that Post Name is selected then hit Save.
7. Begin Demo Import
In the sidebar, go to Appearance > Import Demo Data > Continue & Import.
You do not need to select to install the additional plugins recommended by OCDI; they are not related to the child theme function.
NOTE: If you get an error message here (specifically, 500 or 502), keep selecting Continue & Import until you get the success message. This error tends to occur when using a budget host (like Bluehost) that allocates reduced server resources to customer sites. It’s normal for this process to take several minutes under that scenario.
8. Import Divi Theme Options
In the sidebar, go to Divi > Theme Options > Click the Import/Export icon in the upper right (two arrows pointing up/down) > Select the Import tab.
Click Choose File and browse to the child theme folder > Demo Files > Divi > Select Divi Theme Options.json and upload > Select the blue button to Import Divi Theme Options.
The screen should refresh and show a green checkmark in the center to indicate success. Click the green button to Save Changes.
9. Import Divi Theme Builder Layouts
In the sidebar, go to Divi > Theme Builder > Click the Import/Export icon in the upper right (two arrows pointing up/down) > Select the Import tab.
Click Choose File and browse to the child theme folder > Demo Files > Divi > Select Divi-Theme-Builder-Templates.json and upload. Select the checkbox to Import Presets > (see Note below before proceeding with import).
NOTE: By default, the options to Override Existing Default Website Template and Override Existing Assignments are selected. If you are installing this on a new WordPress site those are not an issue. If you are installing this on an existing site with Divi, you will need to decide if you want to override prior settings. If you do this, I strongly advise also selecting Download Backup Before Importing.
With import settings selected, hit the blue button to Import Divi Theme Options.
Click the green button to Save Changes.
10. Set your homepage
By default, your homepage should be properly selected but you can double-check that now.
In the sidebar, go to Settings > Reading.
Under the section called Your Homepage Displays, make sure that Statice Page is selected, then click on the Hompage dropdown box and select Home > Save Changes. If these settings are already filled in, you can exit the page and proceed to the next step.
